Kennesaw, Georgia

During the Civil War, Kennesaw was the home of the Great Locomotive Chase on April 12, 1862. An abundance of water and high ground adjacent to the railroad led to the construction of worker’s shanties near the present day Kennesaw, becoming known as “The Big Shanty”. During the American Civil War, Big Shanty was the site of major fighting in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

Every April the annual Big Shanty Festival in Kennesaw displays over 200 arts and crafts booths along with 20 food booths. The festival brings roughly 60,000 people to Kennesaw each year.
